Fixing Windows 7 – Samba Issues

Last Updated on Tuesday, 22 December 2009 10:30 Written by Alan Wednesday, 23 December 2009 08:00

Today we’re going to get a little geeky here.  I am running Windows 7 on my Desktop, Laptop and Media Center PC’s and FreeNAS on my home server.  While neither the laptop nor media center have ever had a problem seeing FreeNAS, I have encountered several problems on the desktop.  The end result was that when I clicked on Network FreeNAS wasn’t there.

I scoured the internet and found several solutions.  The first time this happened one solution worked and the second time another solution solved it.  So, in the spirit of, hopefully, leaving no stone unturned I am going to list all solutions and hope that if you work through each you, too, will solve this issue.

1. Let’s start with Start => Control Panel => System and Security => Administrative Tools.

2. Now click Local Security Policy => Local Policies => Security Options.

NOTE: The following changes are all made by right-clicking the item and choosing Properties.

3. Scroll to Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level and set this to LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated.

4. Now scroll to Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and set both to No minimum.

5. Finally, scroll to Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers and set this to Enabled.

This should do the the trick.  Happy networking!
