Commercial skip was a feature in original DVR technology, but has largely been removed because of TV networks threats of lawsuits. Thanks to Dish Network, and its new Hopper product, this lost functionality is back in the spotlight, but of course, only available to those with a subscription to the service.
But, if you are a DirecTV customer then all hope is not lost — a recent work-around was published by Lifehacker that details the quick process to enable the feature.
- Press MENU.
- Browse to Search and Browse and click it.
- Browse down to Smart Search, and press Select.
- Type in 30SKIP.
- Press the red button on your remote. Make sure the ALL header is highlighted.
- Press SELECT.
- You may see a message that says “There are no matching programs.” That’s okay.
- Press EXIT
30 seconds will require the fast forward button to be tapped several times, but its better than nothing, so if you are a DirecTV customer then its still a step forward.

Steaming video from the internet has become the norm these days. Despite restrictions, almost every TV show or movie you could wish for is available online. Finding each, however, can be a problem — if only there a central repository where one could check such information…
As it turns out, there is. CanIStream. It is that place. This is not a one-stop-shop for everything, but it does cover some of the most important sites on the internet. These include Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Crackle, YouTube, StreamPix, SnagFilms, Redbox Instant and more.
Simply search for content and the service will tell you if and where it is available. “CanIStream. It is a free service created by Urban Pixels that allows you to search across the most popular streaming, rental, and purchase services to find where a movie is available. If the movie you’re looking for is not available, just sign-up, set a reminder and voila we will shoot you an email when your chosen service makes the movie available. It’s simple and fast”.
While the site fails to list network web sites, it is still a good starting spot for your search. However, many of the services involved require a subscription.Learn More
