Microsoft created the Outlook Social Connector back in 2009 to integrate social networks into a user’s Outlook program in the hopes of bringing as much information as possible together in one place.  More recently, in July of 2010, they added Facebook to the list of networks available in the Social Connector, to go along with LinkedIn, Windows Live Messenger, MySpace, and more.

Yesterday Microsoft posted a quick message to their Outlook blog letting everyone know that a new update for Outlook Connector for Facebook had been released.  “Recently, we released a small update to the software that connects the Outlook Social Connector to Facebook. If you already use the Outlook Social Connector to connect to Facebook, you can get  the software update in our download center.”  The update allows you to connect to Facebook over a secure, or https, connection, something that surprisingly wasn’t built into the older version of the app.

If you would like to learn more about the Outlook Social Connector you can visit Microsoft Office.  The new update is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.  You will need to be using either Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010, which should include almost everyone, as does the Windows version requirement which is, in a nutshell, Windows XP SP3 or newer.  To get the update, as well as installation instructions, visit the Microsoft Download Center.

Using the Outlook 2010 Ignore Button

It has been a long time coming, but Microsoft Outlook finally has a way to automatically get rid of all of those unwanted email messages.  It won’t get rid of ALL of those “Reply All” emails you wish hadn’t been sent to “All”, but it can help rid you of the future bombardment that can be associated with these well-meaning, but misguided, souls who need a lesson in email etiquette.

The first step is recognizing the problem – when Bob sends a “Reply All”, or other type of unwanted message, you can click the “Ignore” button.  That message, and every one associated with it (in the conversation thread), will go to the “Deleted items” folder.   How cool is that?  Your own personal spam filter that you have complete control over!loo

To get started, just fire up Outlook and click on the message in question.  On the “Home” tab you will find an “Ignore” button in the top menu, near the left side.  Click it, and the email, and all others associated with it, will disappear to your trash.

This is a great way to help clean up email quickly, and without flagging your unwitting friends and colleagues as spammers.  Maybe by Office 2012 Microsoft will have AI take care of this for us…

Outlook is the most popular desktop email client in the world.  Many home users, and even more business users, are on Outlook every day.  Thankfully, the Microsoft Office email client allows for a lot of customization and plugins.  One of the most popular add-ons has become the Outlook Connector, which was released by Microsoft themselves.

The Outlook Connector Pack allows users to import their Hotmail and Facebook (Messenger Chat) into Outlook.  It is described by Microsoft in the following way:

Outlook Connector Pack is part of Windows Live Essentials and includes Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector and Microsoft Outlook Social Connector Provider for Windows Live Messenger, so you can stay connected to Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger from within Outlook.

You can download it from Outlook Connector Pack and install either, or both, of the connectors.  It requires Windows 7 or Vista SP2 and at least 1 GB of RAM.  It also comes as a part of Windows Live Essentials.
