Back in June we brought you some new of the upcoming Acer RevoCenter.  Now, it look like it is finally set to ship.  Today, Microsoft announced the Acer RevoCenter RC110 and RC111 availability dates for the global market.  These are very compact server for the home user and run, of course, Windows Home Server 2011.

The servers will both run on Atom processors, with the RC110 getting a D425, while the RC111 sports a D525.  Both boxes will hold up to 4 hot-swappable SATA drives, up to 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, have both USB2.0 and 3.0 ports, Gigabit ethernet, and run WHS 2011 which is compatible with Windows 7, Widows Vista, and Windows XP clients.  There was no word on pricing.  Acer has done a good job of keeping the Revo series very affordable, so we expect these server to follow in that same path.

You can check Acer’s pictures and specs below.

Microsoft Releases Windows Home Server 2011 Media Streaming Advisory

Microsoft is acknowledging an issue in Windows Home Server 2011 that can allow the system to potentially overwrite your album art and music metadata without authorization.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Talk about your nasty bugs.  The problem had been pointed out twice by the website WeGotServed (see How To: Stop Windows Home Server Overwriting your Album Art and MP3 Tags and Windows Home Server 2011 Metadata Synchronization Issue)

The Microsoft announcement also acknowledges two other known bugs in WHS 2011 – “”Repeat” button does not function for single file streaming from Remote Web Access Page” and “The media file will still be displayed in the media player after they have been moved to a new folder.”

While there are no fixes or patches for these issues as of yet, Microsoft does give specific work-arounds that can be used for now.  We expect a permanent fix to come with the next update, whenever that may be.  Of course, we may be expecting too much since there has never been a patch issued for the Windows Media Center StartResources.dll problem, and then pointed out a second time with an update.

For now, users will need to follow the instructions that Microsoft gives on their TechNet Wiki and hope for the best.

Microsoft Shows Off HomeGroup for Windows Home Server

Last Updated on Friday, 22 July 2011 07:12 Written by Alan Friday, 22 July 2011 07:12

Users of Windows 7 have become familiar with HomeGroup, a much simpler version of home networking that was introduced in Microsoft’s latest version of their flagship operating system.  It is best defined by Webopedia:

In Windows 7, the HomeGroup feature makes home networking easier by letting you set up a simple password — protected network with other Windows 7 systems through which you can easily share printers and folders located anywhere on your system including those that belong to individual accounts. You only need to enter the network password once, when you join the Windows 7 system to the HomeGroup.

The HomeGroup feature is found in every version of Windows 7, but there are a couple of important caveats to be aware of. First, systems with Windows 7 Starter (available mainly on netbooks and other low-end systems) only let you join a HomeGroup, not create one. Second, Windows 7 systems that are members of a domain can also join a HomeGroup, but only for purposes of accessing resources other systems are sharing for security reasons, a domain member can’t share its own data with a HomeGroup.

Now Microsoft has released a video tutorial for users of Windows Home Server to get everyone up to speed on using HomeGroup in WHS.  Many users probably are not even aware that HomeGroup is built into WHS, and contains features like PlayTo.  Below is the latest is a series of videos called “Learning Bites”.
