Anti-Virus Finally Available for Windows Home Server 2011

One thing that has been lacking from the latest version of Windows Home Server is anti-virus protection. The first version of the Windows Home Server operating system from Microsoft has several anti-virus apps available from different security firms, but the 2011 OS has had nothing so far. That has been a source of some frustration from the enthusiast community who were anxious for the latest version of the server OS.
Now, finally, a company has stepped up to create the first, and only, anti-virus, software for the latest Windows Home Server version. Security firm G Data has entered the picture with their G Data IS for Home Server, which is available now for $99. Anti-virus was one of the first apps requested by Windows Homer Server users after the 2011 version was released.
It’s funny, but none of the vendors who released anti-virus apps for the original Windows Home Server have issued updates to support the latest version of the server operating system. That’s a shame, but thankfully G Data has come up big for all of us. The price is a bit steep, but when you own the market, as G Data currently does, you can name your price. However, before you fret over the cost, the $99 buys you anti-virus protection for not just your Windows Home Server, but also up to five computers on your network. You can check them out at G Data Software. Perhaps soon Microsoft will step up with a version of their Microsoft Security Essentials for the Windows Home Server.

Windows Home Server has become a popular, but still somewhat niche product, with a core group of users. While there was a lot of grumbling about the removal of some features with the release of WHS 2011, the talk has died away, and it has once again become known as a solid offering with a lot of great features. More importantly, it’s likely the future of the home, with more and more families having multiple computers and more sophisticated home networks, with media streaming reaching the entire household.
Now Viridian PC, makers of energy-efficient servers, have announced the availability of two new models, the VS-5HA and VS-4HA. You can actually get a Viridian Server with no operating system or with any Microsoft server OS you prefer.
The VS-5HA has 5 drive bays and a sleek look. The VS-4HA, obviously, has 4 drive bays. Even the top-of-the-line tricked-out unit uses only 45 watts. Both models sport Intel processors, along with solid hardware and “Both servers are available pre-installed with Windows Home Server 2011, carry a list of options that include memory upgrades, e-SATA ports, mirrored system drives, data drives and hot-swappable redundant power supplies.”
You can check out full line of servers by visiting Viridian PC.

Back in June we brought you some new of the upcoming Acer RevoCenter. Now, it look like it is finally set to ship. Today, Microsoft announced the Acer RevoCenter RC110 and RC111 availability dates for the global market. These are very compact server for the home user and run, of course, Windows Home Server 2011.
The servers will both run on Atom processors, with the RC110 getting a D425, while the RC111 sports a D525. Both boxes will hold up to 4 hot-swappable SATA drives, up to 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, have both USB2.0 and 3.0 ports, Gigabit ethernet, and run WHS 2011 which is compatible with Windows 7, Widows Vista, and Windows XP clients. There was no word on pricing. Acer has done a good job of keeping the Revo series very affordable, so we expect these server to follow in that same path.
