Microsoft today announced the release of eight new official Windows Phone nature-themed wallpapers. These are the first third-party wallpapers to be officially sanctioned by the software giant. The wallpapers come courtesy of graphic designer Levi Freeman. Freeman is a photographer based in London.
The set of wallpapers features eight separate nature scenes and can be downloaded directly from Freeman’s web site, or you can use your phone to scan the QR code from the web site Microsoft provides a how-to article on changing the wallpaper on your handset.
For more information, and some interesting background information on the designer you can head over the Windows Phone blog and read the entire announcement. Microsoft plans to arrange more collaborations with other artists in the future so hopefully we will be seeing a lot more variety in the Windows Phone wallpapers in the future.

The “Smoked by Windows Phone” contest started off back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and has spread around the world from there. Now Microsoft has spread the goodness to our northern neighbors in Canada. The speed contest recently came to the city of Toronto.
Microsoft has boasted a 98 percent success rate in these games and, while some people claim the game is slanted towards processes that Windows Phone handles best, they are really everyday tasks that any user want to accomplish quickly with his or her smartphone. Microsoft takes on all competitors from Android to Blackberry to iPhone.
The video posted below comes courtesy of MobileSyrup, who’s representative also left without the $100 prize for besting a Windows Phone. Microsoft offers the cash to anyone who can beat their handset in the speed test, while losers walk away with a Smoked by Windows Phone” tee shirt.

Without any announcement, Microsoft has rolled out an important update to their Bing Maps over the past few days. Maps, which are part of the Bing mobile app suite, are a direct competitor to Google Maps, which still has a firm grip on the market. Bing, however, is perhaps a better choice, especially for Windows Phone users.
The new update brings expanded traffic coverage to the Maps, now covering main roads as opposed to just interstates and highways. Like Google, Bing displays traffic information through a layer which can be enabled. Roads are color-coded in green, yellow, and red based on the volume of traffic.
Windows Phone users should receive the update automatically, and most probably already have. Bing is also available for Android and iOS.
