Windows Phone Roadmap Leaked

A Windows Phone roadmap leaked out on the internet today that shows the past and future plans that Microsoft has for their growing mobile operating system. The web site WMPoweruser uncovered the document which they believe to be from October 2011, meaning it’s fairly up to date. It shows the product launch in October of 2010 and the Mango update in Q4 of 2011, which is no great feat given that hindsight is always 20/20. However, it also shows plans for the next two updates that Microsoft has planned for Windows Phone.
The next update, known to Microsoft by the code name “Tango”, is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012. Tango will be geared towards making Windows Phone available to more low-end devices, or as Microsoft refers to them, “products with the best prices”. That’s an area of the mobile market where Microsoft is not present at the moment. It’s also an area that Apple is not in, but likely has no interest in. However Android is all over it now and could use some good competition.
The roadmap also shows that Microsoft plan to the release the “Apollo” update in the fourth quarter of 2012. For this update they have the descriptor “superphones”, whatever that may mean, and a plan to get competitive in the business market. The business market was once dominated by RIM and their Blackberry devices, but more recently has seen an influx of iPhone and Android handsets.
For some time now Microsoft have said they expect Windows Phone to become a real market force in 2012, and this roadmap seams to illustrate that the plan is still in place. Sadly, the biggest update, Apollo, is still a year away, if this roadmap holds true to it’s course.
