Only a month after releasing version 4.0 Mozilla has pushed Firefox 5.0 out to users. The release is simultaneous for all platforms – Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. According to Mozilla “The new version of Firefox comes on the heels of the wildly successful release of Firefox 4, which had more than 200 million downloads on Windows, Mac and Linux and millions of downloads in the Android Market.”
With this release Mozilla has officially moved to the rapid release schedule that Google has used for their Chrome browser. They claim that 5.0 has “more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements.” In addition, the Firefox for Android version now contains their “Do Not Track” technology. This allows users to set individual preferences on website to prevent behavioral tracking.
The new web browser is also more developer-friendly with new Firefox Add-on SDK for Windows, Mac and Linux to enable local development of add-ons, and the Firefox Add-on Builder Beta.
You can download version 5, if you haven’t already had it pushed to your computer, over at the Firefox site.
