Windows 8 to Have Built-in Virtual Drive

Microsoft follower and writer of Within Windows, Rafael Rivera, has revealed yet another nugget of information regarding the next version  of the Windows operating system, known as Windows 8.  This time we have learned that next OS out of Redmond will contain it’s own built-in Virtual Drive.  Virtual Drives are yet another bit of software that was previously left to add-on manufacturers.

Previously if you wanted to mount an .ISO file you would need third-party software such as Daemon Tools or Slysoft’s Virtual Clone Drive.  But, much as Windows 8 will kill the need for Adobe’s Reader app, it seems they will also kill this software niche.

The Windows 8 version allows the user to right-click an .ISO file and choose a “Mount” option.

Like the PDF reader this is yet another built-in functionality that may have Microsoft headed for the courts.  That said, we think it’s about time that something so basic and simple be added to the right-click context menu.
