(Update 2/19/11) Drop.io has shut down it’s service.

First, in order to explain what drop.io is I will quote their website, which explains it best.

About drop.io

Drop.io is an easy to use, online collaboration and file sharing service that provides users with a simple, real time and private way to chat and share images, video, audio, documents and other digital content through unique, user-created and controlled sharing points called ‘drops.’ watch our how to video Once you have the hang of the basics, check out what it means to do it all in realtime for seamless collaboration

In just two clicks, users are able to seamlessly create personal sharing points, upload content via web, e-mail, MMS, Facebook, Firefox extension, phone and fax inputs and share it on-the-fly through drop.io’s various outputs like web, e-mail, MMS, Twitter, iTunes, fax and more.

Each ‘drop’ is non-searchable, non-networked, does not require any type of account registration and can be password-protected and set to expire after a period of time, so you can share exactly what you want with whom you want for as long as you want.

Drop.io is used by a wide range of users seeking a convenient and private method for sharing all types of digital content, ranging from families sharing baby photos to large organizations using ‘drops’ as dynamic, collaborative real-time workspaces. more on drop.io uses

After using the service for a while I have found it to be quite simple and fast. I especially like the Firefox extension, email and MMS.  It is perfect for getting a group of photos to a friend or family member and avoiding the file size limits of directly emailing them.

You can do a lot of the same things with Dropbox, but I have been using both which provides extra capacity and redundancy in case one ever has a system problem.

[...] anxious to try out.  It seemed like a scaled down version of Dropbox (our review) or Drop.io (our review).  There wasn’t a mention of requiring a sign-up, file size restrictions, storage space [...]
