If you’re running Windows XP, Vista, 2000, 7, or Server 2003 then you have a great, free spyware and virus scanner from Microsoft – the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

1. To get started click Start then Run and type MRT and hit enter.  If you get nothing then you can download it HERE and then follow these steps once you’ve installed it.

2. Click Next on the welcome screen (you can also view a list of malware that the tool detects).

3. Now you have 3 options – you can do a Quick scan which I would recommend doing periodically, a Full scan would be best if you think you may have an infection, or a Customized scan of a particular file or folder, which would be a good idea if you’re suspicious of a file you downloaded or received in email.

The quick scan will only take a few minutes while the full scan can take a good bit longer.  Microsoft updates this tool at least once per month which makes it a great addition to your toolbox.
