Adding Windows 7 to an XP Network

So, now that you have that shiny, new Windows 7 PC (or maybe you upgraded your older one) the first question that usually pops up is something like “How do I get this networked with my XP machine?”.  It’s not as difficult as you may think.

1. You need to verify the workgroup name on the XP system.  By default XP set this name as “MSHOME”.

2. Now let’s change the name on your Windows 7 PC, which by default is “WORKGROUP” (this was also the default in Vista).  Click Start and open the Control Panel then click System and Security and then System.  Here you will see your computer name and workgroup name (Note I have already changed the workgroup name).

3. To the right side of the screen click Change Settings.

4. Now, on the System Properties dialog box click on the Computer Name tab and then Change.

5. Make sure the Workgroup radio button is checked and type in “MSHOME” (or whatever name you gave your XP system) and then hit OK.

6. Now go to Control Panel => Network and Internet => Network and Sharing Center => Change Advanced Sharing Settings (on the side panel). Make sure Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, and Public Folder Sharing are all set to “on” and Password Protected Sharing is set to “off”.

7. Now from Start click Computer.  Find the folder(s) you want to share and right-click it then Properties => Sharing Tab => Advanced Sharing => check the box for Share this folder => Apply => OK => Close.

8. Finally, right-click the shared folder then Properties => Security Tab => Edit => Add and type “Everyone” (not the quotes) into the box and select OK. Check the boxes next to the permissions you want to allow (e.g. Read or Write, etc.) then Apply => OK. Some messages may appear: “An error occurred while applying…” This is not unusual and can be ignored by clicking Continue.

If you have a third party Firewall then you may need to configure it to allow file sharing.

Many thanks for some of the work in putting together this solution to ShockDoctor7.
