Backup and Sync Bookmarks With Xmarks

Are you a Bookmark person like me?  If so you’ll want to have your bookmarks backed up in case of a PC crash, or even better, have your same bookmarks available across multiple PC’s.  Bookmark a site on your desktop and it will be available on your laptop instantly!  Even have different bookmark profiles for different PC’s.  All of this, and more, is available with one of my favorite apps – Xmarks.

Xmarks works with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.  And, plug-ins are available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari.

To get started simply download the plug-in for your browser of choice.  In my case I am using Firefox on all of my computers.  However, to save me from uninstalling and reinstalling Xmarks (and because most Windows customers use it) I will use Internet Explorer for this tutorial.

1. So, lets get started and get all of my bookmarks installed in IE.  We’ll start by installing the plug-in.

2. Next, run the installer.

3. Now, we begin the easy setup.

In my case, I already have an account, but if you don’t then the first step will allow you to create one.

Now, if you already have an account, you will be able to choose which profile of bookmarks you’d like to install.  Since this is my office desktop (as opposed to my Media Center) I want my standard PC profile.

4. Now you can sync the bookmarks you previously backed up to Xmarks back you your PC.  If this is the first time you’ve used it then you will be able to reverse that sync and load all of your stored bookmarks up to Xmarks for safekeeping.
